A dignified and healthy existence for everyone
Founding
SWAPKenya.nl Foundation was established on 31 August 2021 with the aim of providing social and social assistance and disaster relief to people in Western Kenya. The foundation has no profit motive; all income (minus expenses) benefits the projects.
Vision and mission
Everyone has the right to a dignified and healthy existence. Based on this vision, we dedicate ourselves to people in Western Kenya who are in urgent need of (financial) help. These are concrete, short-term and small-scale projects or requests for help. Such as a contribution to repairing a house after a flood, school fees, the purchase of a wheelchair or other aid, a drinking water supply for a village or a few sewing machines for a small business. Small contributions that can make a big difference to someone. Helping someone on their way to independence, making someone more resilient, or for better future opportunities.
Contactperson in Kenya
Alie Eleveld is our Dutch advisor and contact in Kenya. She is also founder of the NGO Safe Water and AIDS Project (SWAP), based in Kisumu, western Kenya. She is a paediatric nurse specialising in tropical medicine and public health. Alie has lived and worked in East Africa since 1984.
Work area and field workers
Some 10 million people live in western Kenya, mostly in rural areas around Kisumu, Kenya's third largest city and around Lake Victoria. SWAP's head office is located in Kisumu.
Problem area
Much of the population lives on less than €2 a day and depends on small-scale businesses, fishing and agriculture. Many areas are difficult to reach because of poorly maintained roads. There are frequent floods in western Kenya, with major consequences for the population. There is high unemployment, especially after the COVID-19 epidemic. As a result, there is additional poverty, crime and people with alcohol and drug problems. The quality of health care is minimal.
