Succesverhaal Ombaka School
Support a kitchen for Ombaka School in flood prone area in Kenya.

Success story Sept 2021-Oct 2023

Ombaka Primary School is located in western Kenya and has over 400 pupils. The school served as an evacuation camp for more than a year from 2021, sheltering 1,200 households as a result of flooding from Lake Victoria. This seriously affected the school's infrastructure.

Malnourished children.

When Ombaka Primary School reopened after a year, SWAP fieldworkers found that there were many early signs of malnutrition among the pupils. Because of the fragility of the area, many parents had lost their jobs and were struggling to earn a living, we appealed to donors through DonorSee to support the school.

Meals and more.

At the school, cooking was done outside on wood, which is a scarce commodity. A charitable organisation offered to cook lunches for the students, provided there was a kitchen. The initial support from DonorSee benefactors went towards building a kitchen with energy-efficient hobs, using less firewood and producing less smoke. This was an eco-friendly and sustainable solution that will benefit the school for many years to come.

Children now get at least one decent meal a day, they perform better in school and their health and nutritional status have improved. Apart from installing the new kitchen with energy-efficient cooking appliances, SWAPKenya.nl also provided other necessities for the school's teachers and students. These included sanitary pads for girls, food for the feeding programme, ceramic filters for safe drinking water and improvement of the toilets.

On behalf of SWAPKenya.nl, thank you very much for all your generous donations!
