Success story DonorSee Community Support
Success Story DonorSee Community Support january 2026
DonorSee is a US Crowdfunding platform through which SWAP raised substantial funds for community support. In total over USD 46,000 was raised supporting 88 projects.
Education
Due to the high burden of disease and Western Kenya being endemic for malaria and HIV many children have lost one or both parents and struggle to complete their education. Some end up living with elder grandparents and others are in child headed households. We supported 25 children with scholarships for secondary education or colleges. This has given them a chance for future employment and have taken them out of the cycle of poverty.

Entrepreneurship / Small Scale Business
Many women struggle financially after the husbands who are mostly inancially responsible die, abandon the family, get sick or lose employment. The area also has many teenage pregnancies and single mothers who have dropped out of school and depend on family and well-wishers to pay for basic needs and education of the children. This also affects youth who after college cannot find steady employment. In order to make them self-reliant SWAP has supported 23 families with small scale business support, such as selling health products, fruits and vegetables, food kiosks, chicken rearing among others.

Physical and mentally challenged support
SWAP has changed the lives of many physical and mentally challenged people by supporting with wheelchairs, therapy sessions, clinic fees, physiotherapy and nutritional support. Often there is a lot of stigma around physical and challenged community members and other families do not have the financial capacity to seek support. 16 were supported by SWAP.

Medical support
We came across many people who urgently needed medical care. Often financially strained to seek support and no health insurance. This many times drained all the resources of the close family and therefore they appeal to well-wishers to contribute. This could be payment for clinic, medical consultancy fees, medication, laboratory fees and transport to and from the health facility. In total 8 people were supported with medical care.

Shelter and Infrastructure improvements
SWAP supported 8 families with improved shelter and 4 institutions with infrastructure improvement. At two schools operating without electricity supply solar was installed. One school received support to build a kitchen with clean energy cook stoves and one children’s home was given a sanitation block.

Safe Water Enterprises
Support was given to water enterprises to continue to provide safe water to remote areas. This was very important because the area has witnessed several cholera outbreaks during the past years. Support was given for a water pump and water tank to increase capacity of storage of water. 4 water enterprises were supported.

Emergency support
SWAP was able to respond to two emergencies. Following the erratic rains the area got flooded which displaced many communities, their livelihoods and houses were destroyed and they were at risk of disease outbreaks. SWAP was able to provide hand washing stations, point of use water treatment, soaps and organized medical camps in collaboration with the ministry of health. The second emergency was during the recent cholera outbreak, where SWAP responded by water quality testing of suspected contaminated sources and donating soap, alcohol based hand rub, hand washing stations and chlorine.
