SWAP Model Center was established in 2011 to showcase best health practices and innovations. It is situated in Ahero town in Western Kenya opposite the hospital and local market. Some of the innovations are the solar powered water disinfection unit (Sola Maji) where community members can access safe drinking water at affordable price. The water is drawn from river Nyando and disinfected using latest technology. It has a community kiosk where social marketing is done of health and hygiene products. The latrines in the centre were upgraded with the installation of Satopan, featuring a mechanical seal that blocks exposure to open air. It limits the spread of pathogens and reduces odours and fly infestation. On several strategic places, hand washing stations are placed for demonstration and to promote hand hygiene as well as ceramic filters used for drinking water.  A training room is utilized by community health promoters and the county government for trainings and meetings with community groups and technical working groups.  A traditional kitchen was built but with clean energy cook stoves for demonstration. It reduces smoke and particulate matter and addresses climate change concerns. All these products are available and can be demonstrated at the community kiosks or during training sessions.

The centre has a tree nursery managed by a local community based organization. Ahero SWAP model center is frequently visited by university students for exposure and learning about public health innovations. We also received international students from Europe and US for mentorship, internship and learning.​
