Success story Dec 2023

Chiela women group is a group of 15 fish mongers, mostly widows who support each other with income generating activities since 2015. They operate from Dunga Beach in Kisumu. They were supported by SWAP to get a tour boat which is mostly business managed by men. They became the first women group to own a boat and with the profit from the boat rides they managed to have a second boat made. The women were trained on ecotourism and business skills and have since ventured into several small scale businesses to increase their revenue to take care of their families. Among them selling fish, soap making and tours with the boats on the lake. They also have a savings and loans scheme.
Due to low business during the COVID-19 period and recent flood as well as dwindling fish in the lake they asked for some support via Donor See. To help boost their business they needed support to repair one of the boats and to finalize painting and other final touches on a kiosk, which they plan to lease out for them to have steady rental income every month. The women are empowered and ambitious but from poor back ground, with most of them taking care of orphans. The income helps them to keep their children and grand-children in school and buy basic needs for their families.
The project is fully funded. Priority was given to repair the boat, since during the Xmas season they expected many people coming for boat rides. The painting of the kiosks is completed and half of it is rented out and the other half the group is using for their soap business.
